You may remember that during the recent Floodplain Regulations revisions process, it was determined that Charlotte-Mecklenburg Storm Water Services would begin a project to update the City's Floodplain Maps.  We are currently seeking volunteers to participate in a Task Force for the Little Sugar Creek and Briar Creek re-mapping effort.  The Task Force will be composed of residential and commercial property owners, and community leaders residing or having property in those watersheds. The primary focus of the Task Force is to provide input on how area specific land related information (such as existing land use, future land use area maps, etc.) will be used in the re-mapping effort.

Accurate and updated floodplain maps are important to public health and safety in our community. Newer floodplain maps will work in tandem with regulations to:
  • Ensure safer construction for new or redeveloped buildings in/near floodplains
  • Communicate the flood risk to current and potential floodplain property owners
  • Determine where flood insurance is needed and properly rate the policies
  • Assist with planning and prioritizing flood mitigation projects, like acquisitions
Attached is a current list of volunteers who will be working on the Little Sugar Creek and Briar Creek study.  Staff solicited volunteers by sending letters to all Homeowner Association contacts, the Real Estate and Building Industry Coalition (REBIC) and the Charlotte Regional Realtors.  The Task Force will be chaired by Storm Water Advisory Committee member Tim Mead.  We wanted to give City Council an opportunity to suggest any other volunteers.  Please send your suggestions to Tim Richards by Friday, January 11 and we will make sure they are a part of the process.
