Solid Waste Services Annexation Communication
Staff Resource:  Victoria Garland, 704-432-4223 - vgarland@ci.charlotte.nc.us

Each year during annexation Solid Waste Services sends information to customers to explain the new services, collection guidelines and provide them with their new collection day.

This year the communication will begin on May 21 when a pre-recorded message will be sent via the Charlotte-Mecklenburg's GeoNotification system to all annexation residents.  The message will welcome residents to Charlotte and provide important dates to remember.  This is the first year Solid Waste has used the GeoNotification system to alert customers.  The pre-recorded message will heighten customers' awareness to the information that will come in the mail and that will come attached to their rollout carts. The pre-recorded message will include the following dates:

  • Monday, June 4 - Welcome packets will be sent to residents' homes.  These
packets will include resident's new collection day and frequently asked questions.
  • Monday, June 11 - The cart vendor will begin delivering garbage carts and
    recycling bins.
  • Monday, June 18 - Cart and bin deliveries completed.  Customers who are
being annexed are asked to call 311 to report a missed delivery.
Other pieces of the communication process include:
  • Print and radio advertisements - Radio and print advertisements will run and air in The Charlotte Observer and on WNKS, WKQC, WSOC and WQNC beginning
    June 1.
  • Annexation website - Customers can go to Solid Waste Services' website - http://curbit.charmeck.org - and click the Getting Annexed link to get more information on annexation. The annexation site provides a link to the address information center, which will provide customers with their new collection day.  Customers can schedule Speakers Bureau presentations as well as view answers to frequently asked questions.
  • Email communication - Neighborhood association contacts in the annexation area received an email from Solid Waste Services on May 14 with information they can include in their neighborhood newsletters.
