Media Story - Security at Wastewater Plants

On Monday and Tuesday, WBTV is expected to air a two-part story about security measures at our five wastewater treatment facilities. Starting in late February through earlier this week, an 'investigative producer' (and sometimes an associate) reportedly drove in a white, unmarked vehicle through all five plants, including two repeat visits. On several occasions the producer reportedly stayed in the plants for extended periods. On three of the seven occasions the producer got out of his vehicle, walked into open buildings and filmed plant works using a hidden hand-held DVD recorder before leaving without incident.

Safety and reasonable security measures require that individuals should not go unescorted at wastewater facilities. However, wastewater treatment plants do not present a security threat level that drinking water treatment plants do and procedures are different.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities has reasonable and appropriate physical and procedural security measures in place at our wastewater plants and other facilities. Wastewater plants are largely automated, continuously but minimally staffed and necessarily experience multiple visits during the day by construction contractors, vendors and visitors. Based on what the producer told staff, only one of these reported incidents represents a lapse in following established procedures and that lapse has already been addressed. All employees will be reminded to be more vigilant with individuals who come into the plant.
