Solid Waste Services Yard Waste Collection Update
Staff Resource:  Wayman J. Pearson, 704-336-3410 – wpearson@ci.charlotte.nc.us

During the current leaf season, the rapid changes in temperature have resulted in leaves falling at a much faster rate than normal. Due to these circumstances, the volume of yard waste material being generated and placed at the curb has been extremely heavy and has resulted in service delays in all four collection zones.  Solid Waste Services is working diligently to get the yard waste collected as soon as possible, as follows:

  • Collection crews will be working through the weekend to continue to work towards resuming the normal Monday-Friday schedule. In our South and East Zones, crews are focused on servicing Friday collection areas which have the heaviest volume. Crews will continue to collect in these areas until all customers have received service.  As collection is completed to these customers, crews will begin collecting yard waste for Monday customers and continue working through the weekly schedule.
  • We are also obtaining additional temporary resources. Ten new drivers have recently been trained and we expect them to be ready to work this week. The department is working with local solid waste companies to provide additional rear-loader equipment.
  • Mecklenburg County will have the compost facility open Saturday and Sunday from 7 am to 3 pm, to permit vehicles to use the disposal facility.
  • Ads will be placed in The Charlotte Observer on Friday and Saturday to apologize for the delay, advise citizens of collection plans and to ask for patience as we address this huge backlog of yard waste. Other information outlets include C-Mail, City Website, CharMeck311 and ads for Spanish language radio.
  • A media briefing on yard waste collection service has been scheduled for Thursday, November 30 at 2:00 pm in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center Room 267. City Council members are invited to attend. You will also be sent an e-mail notice on Thursday morning.
