Gay Pride Festival
Staff Resource:  Chuck Adkins, 704-353-0477 – cadkins@cmpd.org

The annual Gay Pride festival was held on Saturday, August 26.  Prior to the festival CMPD met with both the event organizers and representatives from Operation Save America to clearly lay out the expectations of conduct from both sides.

Operation Save America obtained three amplified sound permits for locations surrounding the festival site. Approximately 40 protestors came to the event and stationed themselves primarily around the intersection of Trade and Cedar Streets. They also walked through the entire festival site in smaller groups. Two Operation Save America members were warned by Cousins Property Management (managing entity for Gateway) that their conduct was disruptive and they would be banned from the property if it continued. We received noise complaints in reference to the amplified sound from the Operation Save America speakers set up at Trade and Cedar Streets. Several meter readings were taken and, after a formal warning, a citation was issued for violation of the noise ordinance. No other enforcement action was necessary at the festival.

The reporting procedures for any possible violations of obscenity laws were outlined in the pre-event meetings; however, officers did not receive any reports nor observe any materials or behaviors that caused concern of a possible violation.

2006 Wastewater Performance Report
Staff Resource: Doug Bean, 704-391-5070 – dbean@ci.charlotte.nc.us

Attached is a summary version of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities Wastewater Performance Report for the year ending June 30, 2006.  This handout is being distributed in the September water/sewer bills.  In addition, we have shared this report with the six towns we serve (Matthews, Mint Hill, Pineville, Cornelius, Huntersville and Davidson) as well as Mecklenburg County.

This report is a state requirement for all public and private wastewater operators. It lists our highlights and challenges, and describes the wastewater treatment process and how customers can help by reporting sewage spills and keeping grease out of the sewer system.

The bill insert and 40-page report may be found online at www.cmutilities.com.  An advertisement will also be placed in a local Spanish newspaper as well as on our website.
