Mecklenburg Mills Update #3
Staff Resource: Stan Wilson, 704-336-3337; 704-622-7981 (cell) - swilson@ci.charlotte.nc.us

It has been twelve days since we made the emergency move of 59 households from Mecklenburg Mills.

Following is a status report on our efforts to find more permanent housing for the displaced residents and comments regarding the concerns of the residents. We will continue to provide Council with periodic updates.

Permanent Placement Status as of May 24, 2006:
There are 23 households that have not been placed or do not have applications pending. Community Link is assisting Neighborhood Development to expedite finding permanent housing for the remaining households. Community Link has contacted residents to assess individual needs and provide follow-up and counseling.

Moving and Residents Access to Possessions
Staff is currently reviewing bids received from moving contractors on Monday, May 22. The professional engineer has recommended that only professional movers be allowed in to remove the possessions. Residents have indicated that they would like to be on site when their possessions are removed from the apartments.

Hotel Accommodations
Several residents will need to be relocated from Townplace Suites Hotel due to race week reservations. Staff has identified additional rooms in the area.

Communication
On Saturday, May 20, Neighborhood Development management met with residents to address questions. A written update was provided to the residents. In addition, management met with residents on Tuesday evening, May 23. A group meeting with the residents has been scheduled for Thursday, May 25 at 6:00 pm at the Belmont Regional Center located at 700 Parkwood Avenue. Transportation will be provided for those who need assistance. The purpose of the meeting is to inform the residents of the current status and address additional questions.

On Tuesday, May 23, staff began to reimburse May rent and security deposits to residents. Food is continuing to be delivered door-to-door to each resident by a local church. Staff is delivering the residents' mail to the motels daily. Bus passes are being provided for those who need it. Residents are encouraged to call a special hotline at 704-309-0687 particularly after hours for any questions that they may have. The hotline is staffed by a Neighborhood Development Relocation Specialist.
