The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is pleased to be hosting the national Problem Oriented Policing Conference on October 21-23, 2005 at the Marriott Center City. The conference, which was also held in Charlotte last year, brings together law enforcement experts from all over the world to discuss the application of the problem solving philosophy to crime and quality of life issues.

Chief Stephens is offering the Mayor and Council the opportunity to attend any sessions of the conference that are of interest to you. A detailed conference agenda is attached. Those who are interested in attending any of the sessions can contact Darrellyn Kiser at 704-336-7736 or dkiser@cmpd.org  by close of business on Wednesday, October 19, so that she can register you for the sessions of your choice.

City's Ozone Action Day Results
Staff Resource: Julie Burch, 704-336-3187 - jburch@ci.charlotte.nc.us

Cutting Pollution When It Counts is a voluntary ozone program administered by Mecklenburg County Air Quality Division. The purpose of the program is to reduce the cause of ground level ozone particularly on days when ozone is predicted to be at unhealthy and dangerous levels. The plan enlisted businesses to support and encourage their employees to ride the bus, carpool, vanpool, bicycle, walk, telecommute or use flexible scheduling to decrease emissions on high ozone days.

This is the second year that the city has been involved in the program along with several other businesses. Ozone season officially ended September 30. We had eight orange and one red ozone action days after our program started in June. Below are results of the reported combined employee and equipment control efforts of the targeted work locations - CMGC, CMPD and Fire headquarters, Cameron Brown, Utilities on Highway 16 and Aviation.
     - 1,919 City employees were represented from the six targeted locations.
     - Nineteen City Key Businesses or Divisions participated (11 participated in 2004).
     - 599 employees, or 31%, committed to an ozone action plan (501 committed in 2004).
     - City's NOx (nitrous oxides) reduction target was 24.9 pounds. The NOx reduction result was 17.8 pounds.
     - City's VOC (volatile organic compounds) reduction target was 62.1 pounds. The VOC reduction result was 87.6 pounds.
     - City's NOx goal was not met; however, the City exceeded the target of VOC reductions by 25 pounds.
     - Twelve departments/divisions met their targeted goals:
        1. Aviation
        2. Budget & Evaluation
        3. CATS
        4. City Attorney
        5. City Clerk
        6. City Manager's Office
        7. Economic Development
        8. Fire
        9. Human Resources
      10. Internal Audit
