Grease Free Program Promotes Environmental Awareness
Staff Resource: Doug Bean, 704-391-5070

This summer, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities is increasing public awareness about the environmental problems caused when kitchen grease is poured down drains and disposals.

Grease clogs are the number one cause of sewer overflows in our community. Our five-year-old grease inspection program - initially focused on food service establishments and their compliance with installing and maintaining grease traps - has been expanded with a ‘Grease Free’ education message also being shared with apartments and residential customers.

Our grassroots message is going out via bill inserts, community meetings, school education and a small amount of targeted print and billboard advertisements in areas where we are experiencing the most grease buildup.

The Charlotte Apartment Association has been working with us to share the message among its members in the rental community. For more information about Grease Free, customers can visit www.cmutilities.com or call 704-399-2221.

Winn-Dixie Store Closures
Staff Resource: Tom Flynn, 704-432-1396

Council member Phipps has requested information concerning location and strategies associated with the announcement of Winn-Dixie store closings in the Carolinas. Attached is a memorandum from our Economic Development Office detailing this information. Our Economic Development staff will continue to monitor this situation, and will be exploring with our Planning staff opportunities for reuse of potential vacant buildings/sites.
