World Changers Community Rehabilitation Program
Staff Resource: Stan Wilson, 704-336-3337

Neighborhood Development is partnering with the national World Changers organization to rehabilitate 30 homes located in the Lakewood and Thomasboro/Hoskins communities. The event will kick-off on Monday, June 27 and will be completed on Saturday, July 2, 2005.

On Friday, July 1 at 7:00 pm, World Changers will host a closing celebration at the West Mecklenburg High School, 7400 Tuckaseegee Road. The celebration will provide an opportunity for guest speakers and include the recognition of volunteers, music and a video highlighting the week of activities in Charlotte.

World Changers is a volunteer organization that has been working with municipalities, community agencies and businesses since 1990 on a variety of home improvement projects. Thus far, World Changers has over 400 youth and other volunteers committed to the Charlotte project. These volunteers will work on various rehabilitation projects such as painting homes, constructing ramps, replacing roofs, participating in neighborhood cleanups and other light home repairs.

Neighborhood Development will contribute up to $50,000 for building/construction materials. Other partners involved in the World Changers initiative include: Lowes Home Improvement (University City location), providing and installing fire extinguishers, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and assisting with building materials; and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School

System, making available the West Mecklenburg High School to house the volunteers during the week.

This is World Changers first project in the Charlotte area. World Changers organizers have stated that they received more volunteer support in Charlotte than in the other cities that they have worked. Due to the tremendous volunteer support, we anticipate that the rehabilitation program will be expanded to two weeks in FY2006.
