Salvation Army/ Kroc Community Center Site Selection
Staff Resource: Jim Schumacher, 704-336-3656

Last year, the local director of the Salvation Army made a presentation to the City Council regarding funds that the Salvation Army received from the estate of Ray and Joan Kroc (founders of McDonalds). The funding is to be used for the construction and endowment of Community Centers around the country.

Last week, Jim Schumacher participated in a committee that reviewed proposals for potential sites for a community center in Charlotte, including one site owned by the City. Attached is a memorandum on the work of the committee and an article from the Charlotte Observer.

Mark of Distinction Recycling Fashion Show
Staff Resource: Wayman Pearson, 704-336-3410

On Saturday, March 19, 2005, Solid Waste Services, in partnership with Eastland Mall, and the Art Institute of Charlotte, will host the 2nd Time Around Recycling Fashion Show. The event will be held from 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm, lower-level entrance to Dillard's department store in Eastland Mall. The event will showcase clothing that can be made from fibers produced from recycled materials. The event will provide Art Institute students with the opportunity to compete for prizes in two categories - design sketches and clothing composition. Students' designs and looks will compete for best use of material and best of show. Invited guest judges are Cary Mitchell, Cary Mitchell Designs and designer of the Charlotte Bobcats uniforms; Charlotte City Council member Nancy Carter and Bryan Osburn, a local wedding and formal gown designer who has worked with Vera Wang.

Eastland Mall donated the event space and equipment. The mall is also providing discounted gift certificates to serve as part of the students' prize packages, which also include a day with Mitchell or Osburn. Food sampling will also be provided by mall businesses.

The fashion show is one of several high visibility events that are part of the Mark of Distinction program announced in January to increase awareness about recycling in the City's CURB IT! residential recycling program.
