Update on Street Resurfacing Report
Staff Resources: Ruffin Hall, 704-336-3403 and Danny Pleasant, 704-336-2261

During the FY2005 budget discussions, Council requested a staff review of street resurfacing and possible budget implications. The Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) is scheduled to submit its draft report on street resurfacing to the City Manager by October 1.

As a reminder, Council approved a staff analysis of budget adjustment alternatives such as multi-family garbage collection and bulky item pick up as part of the FY2005 budget adoption. Along with the street resurfacing study, staff will report mid-year revenue trends and the other budget adjustment alternatives at the Council's upcoming winter retreat.

Police Department Receives Radio Interoperability Grant
Staff Resource: Paul Paskoff, 704-336-2162

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has received a $5,991,180 grant from the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Community Oriented Policing Services (COPS). The grant is to develop an integrated communications network to connect first responders in this region. The grant can be used to cover the purchase of communications equipment, enhancements to communications infrastructure, and project management expenses.

The grant is awarded under the COPS Interoperable Communications Technology Grant program which was created to encourage and increase the number of integrated communications systems used by law enforcement, fire service and emergency medical services agencies in the same metropolitan area.

This grant will be used to create an integrated communications network for Mecklenburg, Anson, Cabarrus, Catawba, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Stanley and Union counties in North Carolina and Lancaster and York counties in South Carolina. Local agencies in the network will be CMPD, the Fire Department, MEDIC, and the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office.
