Solid Waste:  The Facts on Item Preparation
As you prepare your materials for collection, please remember the City of Charlotte Solid Waste Services has specific guidelines for proper item preparation.  These guidelines ensure that garbage is collected each week, neighborhoods are free from litter and property is not damaged:

  • Bag all garbage before putting it in the roll out cart, making sure not to overfill the cart
  • Place the roll out cart at least 3 feet away from other items, and within 2 feet of the curb before 6:30 am on your scheduled collection day
  • Cut, not fold, cardboard into 3 feet by 3 feet sections and place at curb for collection with recycling
Rinse and wipe out remaining liquid and food from recyclables
  • Don't place yard waste in the roll out cart
  • Make sure yard waste piles are small enough for one person to pick up, and that limbs aren't longer than 5 feet in length and 4 inches in diameter
  • Place leaves and grass clippings in untied plastic bags or uncovered trash cans

If you have bulky items to discard such household furnishings, appliances and lawn equipment:
  • Call 311 or schedule pick up online
  • Place bulky items at the curb only one day prior to the scheduled collection
For more information, including a full list of item preparation guidelines, visit http://curbit.charmeck.org.
