CATS Continues To Clear The Air
The Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) is continuing its efforts to clear the air by expanding the use of Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) from 57 buses to all 324 buses in its fleet.

Reducing the sulfur content in diesel has a number of advantages, including producing lower emissions and enabling the use of pollution control techniques.

Along with the use of USLD, CATS also is continuing the use of diesel particulate filters on its 40-foot buses.  The filters help control soot emissions from diesel exhaust and when used with ULSD, they reduce harmful particulate emissions by up to 90%.  CATS' goal is to have more than 65 buses equipped with these filters by the end of July 2007.

Let's Band Together

Did you know that one of the fastest growing segments of our local community is the Fall Cankerworm?  With autumn in full swing, it's time to band together to help control the cankerworm population.

The City is asking you to help control the cankerworm by banding your trees with a material called Tanglefoot, which is put around the tree's trunk.

Your neighborhood organization may be eligible for a special Neighborhood Matching Grant (NMG), if your neighborhood is in the identified target area of the cankerworm infestation problem area.

Organizations interested in receiving funding should attend one of the scheduled pre-application workshops.  The application deadline is Friday, November 3.

For more details, including grant guidelines and workshop schedules, call 704-336-3385.

Animal Control In the Winner's Circle

Charlotte-Mecklenburg cats got the checkered-flag at the Busch Series Dollar General 300 race recently at Lowes Motor Speedway. The Nine Lives car driven by Auggie Vidovich is part of Morris' Million Cat Rescue campaign, designed to spotlight efforts to rescue one million homeless cats.

Although Vidovich didn't win the race, the local feline population and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Control received a donation of $25,000 from Nine Lives for Animal Control's Spay and Neuter Fund.  According to Nine Lives, 5.5 million cats are euthanized each year, representing 71% of all cats that enter animal shelters.

If you'd like to adopt a homeless cat, visit Animal Control's web site to view adoptable cats or call 311 for more information.

Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries

The Charlotte Fire Department reminds everyone to replace batteries in their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms when changing clocks back on Sunday, October 29.

Replacing smoke and carbon monoxide alarm batteries twice a year is one of the simplest, most effective ways to reduce the number of deaths and injuries related to poisoning and home fires.
