Project Blue Light to Honor Police Officers
From Dec. 1 - 31, blue lights will illuminate the Police Memorial on East Trade Street, across from Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department headquarters, in observance of Project Blue Light.  This annual event honors law enforcement officers who have given their lives in the line of duty.

Residents and businesses are welcome to observe this tradition by including at least one blue light in holiday decorations to show support and appreciation of all law enforcement officers who work 24/7 to make Charlotte-Mecklenburg a safe community.

Since 1892, 33 law enforcement officers have been killed in the line of duty in Charlotte-Mecklenburg.

Guarantee That Recyclable an Afterlife
Ever wonder what happens to recyclables after they are collected?  Well, those plastic soda bottles went on to become that electric blue T-shirt that you love.  Those aluminum cans were transformed into cool fans and pans, and the week's newspaper helped make housing insulation.  RECYCLE IT! and help guarantee that recyclable an afterlife.

Here's what you can recycle:
  • No. 1 and No. 2 plastics
  • Glass (all colors)
  • Newspaper, magazines, telephone books, catalogs, mixed paper and junk mail
  • Spiral paper cans (without wax coating)
  • Aluminum cans
  • Cardboard
  • Gift-wrap

While you do not need to separate recyclables, we do ask that you please:
  • Crush or flatten aluminum cans and plastic containers
  • Discard lids and rinse away food residue
  • Stack newspapers and phone books on top of, beside or underneath recycling bin
  • Remove bows and/or ornaments from gift-wrap
  • Cut (not fold) cardboard into 3-foot by 3-foot sections and stack neatly at curbside
These things shouldn't go in the recycling bin include:
  • Pizza boxes
  • Wax-coated paper products
  • Plastic bags
  • Styrofoam or packing materials
  • Food-contaminated paper products
  • Old clothing
  • Small appliances
  • Hazardous materials (for a list of hazardous materials, visit www.wipeoutwaste.com)
Recyclables are collected once a week the same day as garbage.  Recycling bins should be placed at the curb, at least three feet away from your rollout cart, yard waste, bulky items and obstacles such as mailboxes, telephone poles and vehicles.

New, replacement or additional recycling bins are available at several locations throughout the City.  For more information, call 311 or visit http://curbit.charmeck.org.
