City Suspends SafeLight & SafeSpeed

On May 26, the City suspended the SafeSpeed and SafeLight programs in light of the recent court decision in the case involving where the proceeds of City of High Point's SafeLight program should go.

The N.C. Court of Appeals ruled last week that the state constitution requires cities to give 90% of money collected through the automated programs to local schools.  The City suspended the programs to limit the financial liability in the event the court ruling stands and until the City Council has time to discuss future options at its June 5 meeting.

Charlotte's experience with the SafeSpeed cameras in the 14 designated corridors shows a 12-14% reduction in crashes and a 55% reduction in speeding. Similar safety improvements have been experienced with the SafeLight cameras. The cameras have helped reduce crashes by 19% overall, by 37% at the 22 SafeLight intersections and by 60% on the stretches of street approaching the cameras.

Airport Parking In High Demand

Is it taking you a little longer to find a place to park at Charlotte Douglas International Airport?  Record-breaking passenger loads are increasing demand for airport parking.  The airport expects its nearly 20,000 public parking spaces to be full during peak travel days (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday) and through the periods of the Fourth of July and Labor Day.  So, if you have to park at the airport, the following tips will help:

  • Allow plenty of time for parking.
  • Be aware of the peak days.  On these days, you may be directed to another lot if your first preference is unavailable.
  • Use the Daily, Remote and Long-Term parking areas. The Hourly Deck is intended for those picking up and dropping off passengers.
  • Use the free cell phone lot on Rental Car Road when picking up passengers.

For more information, including parking maps and rates, visit www.charlotteairport.com.

LYNX On Display

CATS' first light rail vehicle will be delivered this summer, but you can get a sneak peek now.  A replica model of the LYNX light rail train and station platform will be on display:

May 30 - June 30
CMGC Lobby, 600 East 4th St.

Information about the vehicle, the LYNX blue line and the South Corridor project also will be available.

Get Involved

Looking for an opportunity to get involved in local government?  Apply for a position on one of the City's Boards and Commissions.

On Monday, June 26, City Council will make nominations to fill vacancies or make reappointments on various boards and committees.

Applications may be obtained online or by calling Jeanne Peek at 704-336-2248.  All applications must be properly signed and returned to the City Clerk's Office by Monday, June 19 at 5 pm.

Report Crimes Online

Citizens can now report non-emergency crimes using Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's Online Reporting System

Instead of calling the Crime Reporting Unit, simply file a report online, and the report number will be emailed to you.  Only crimes involving larceny, harassing phone calls, theft from auto, financial ID theft or property damage can be filed online.  People with emergencies, however, should still call 911.
