City Council Adopts Budget

Additional police officers, neighborhood improvements and road resurfacing are key components of the budget adopted by City Council on Monday, June 19.  It pares down City Manager Pam Syfert's recommended property tax increase of 4.5¢ to 3.86¢, which is an additional $77.20 a year on a $200,000 home.

The additional revenue will provide the following expansions and services:

  • 70 additional sworn police positions
  • Supplemental pay for firefighters with advanced rescue skills
  • Improving street resurfacing cycle to a 16-year cycle.

CATS Opens New Park And Ride

Commuters in Huntersville now have a new place to catch CATS' express bus service with the opening of the Huntersville-Northcross Park and Ride, located on Northcross Drive off Exit 25 near I-77.

The new facility will replace the current park and ride lot location at Target off Exit 25.  It includes 326 spaces, passenger shelters, secure bicycle parking, schedule information, on-site video surveillance during operating hours and integrated public art.

This environmentally-friendly facility also contains rain gardens that collect, store and infiltrate storm water runoff, replenishing the groundwater.

Get Ready To SmartPark

More people, more planes, more filled parking spaces.  That's the summer forecast at Charlotte Douglas International Airport.  Due to the increased loads and increased demand on parking, the airport has introduced SmartPark – a program designed to give people more parking options and near-to real-time parking status reports when coming to the airport.

SmartPark will educate customers of all of their parking options with the intention of alleviating traffic congestion as well as helping customers plan ahead.  The program also educates travelers of peak travel days – Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Sundays also are busy for arriving flights. Days immediately before and after major holidays also are considered heavy travel days.

For more information about parking options, current parking conditions, parking maps and rates, call 704-FLY-5555 or visit www.charlotteairport.com.

Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) will operate on a Sunday schedule on Tuesday, July 4.

Fireworks Safety

The Fourth of July holiday is approaching and many families use fireworks as a way to celebrate.  Unfortunately, if you don't practice fireworks safety, your holiday may not be much fun at all.  When using fireworks:

  • Always read and follow label directions
  • Ignite fireworks on a paved surface away from grass/trees
  • Light one firework at a time
  • Soak used fireworks in water before placing them in the trash.

What's legal in North Carolina:
Legal fireworks: Snake and glow worms, smoke devices, wire sparklers and noisemakers
Illegal fireworks: Anything that explodes or is projected into the air, firecrackers, rockets, roman candles and aerial fireworks.

Citizens with a valid grievance are encouraged to file a report. Reports can be filed in person, by mail or by phone with either the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department or the CRC.  Representatives also are available to receive a report from your home or business.  Every complaint, regardless of its nature, is investigated.
