The Facts On Garbage Preparation

Improperly prepared garbage is creating problems around the City.  Solid Waste Services has specific guidelines for proper item preparation.  These guidelines ensure that garbage is collected each week and neighborhoods are free from litter.  Proper preparation also prevents property damage.

A few basic rules to follow when preparing garbage, recyclables, yard waste and bulky items for collection include:

  • Place the roll out cart more than 3 feet away from other items, and at least 2 feet from the curb
  • Cut, not fold, cardboard into 3 feet x 3 feet sections and place at curb for collection with recycling
  • Make sure yard waste piles are small enough for one person to pick up, and that limbs aren't longer than 5 feet in length and 4 inches in diameter.

Help Connect Charlotte

The Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) has released a list of 20 proposed pedestrian and bicycle connectivity projects that were the result of public involvement workshops this past January.  When funded and implemented, these projects will help improve access and safety for neighborhood residents.

CDOT asks for continued public involvement now through Friday, August 4.  Citizens can visit CDOT's website to view an interactive map of the potential projects and use an online form to provide feedback.

CATS Begins New STS Eligiblity Process

During the last five years, the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) has added numerous routes, making public transportation more convenient across Mecklenburg County.  Along with additional service, CATS also is committed to making transit accessible to all citizens with the installation of wheelchair lifts and voice annunciation systems.

As a result, CATS' Special Transportation Service (STS) will begin a three-step eligibility process for all current and future STS customers.  The new process will require an application, interview and assessment to better determine whether patrons are capable of riding CATS' regular fixed-route bus services.

If a customer is able to use fixed route bus services, then they wouldn't be eligible for STS.  Only those individuals that can't functionally use regular route bus services will be eligible to use STS services.
