Charlotte Trolley Services To Be Suspended
|
Beginning in February 2006, the Charlotte Trolley Line will be suspended for approximately one year as construction crews build transit stations and lay tracks for the South Corridor Light Rail Line from Tremont Avenue to Seventh Street.
During the next year, Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) will operate shuttle bus service from Historic South End to Center City that will closely mirror the suspended Charlotte Trolley Line. Fare for the supplemental shuttle service will be $1 and 50 cents for those who qualify for reduced fare rates.

Preparing For Holiday Travel
|
Are you taking to the skies this holiday season? Charlotte Douglas International Airport anticipates its busiest holiday travel period ever beginning Thursday, December 22. The airport experienced record parking demands over Thanksgiving and, to date has experienced a 14% increase in passenger traffic from last year.
Travelers are encouraged to carpool or be dropped off at the airport. Parking lots are expected to be at capacity during this travel time.

Who Exemplifies MLK Ideals?
|
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee is seeking nominations for the "King Medallion" Award. The recipient will be recognized during the January celebration of the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The King Medallion is the highest award given by the City of Charlotte to honor the King holiday. It's presented annually to individuals in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg community who best exemplify the ideals of the civil rights leader. Nominees must be a resident of Charlotte-Mecklenburg, and promote the ideals of racial equality and social justice as espoused by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. including, but not limited to:
- Celebrating and promoting the worth of all human beings
- Pursuing equal rights by non-violent means
- Encouraging people of diverse cultures to live together in a spirit of love and acceptance
- Active involvement in community service
- Resisting injustice wherever it is found
- Promoting inter-group relations and understanding.

Prevent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

With the passing of a severe winter storm through parts of North Carolina, residents may find that they're without power and using alternative heating appliances to keep warm. The Charlotte Fire Department wants everyone to protect themselves by learning the warning signs, symptoms and causes of deadly carbon monoxide poisoning.

Protect Plumbing From Frigid Weather
|
With temperatures dropping in the 20's, the following are ways customers can protect their home or business plumbing:
- Keep pipes thawed in unheated areas. Seal openings and air leaks in crawl spaces or basements.
- Properly position the meter box lid. If the meter cover is broken or missing, contact Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities at 311.
- Insulate pipes and hot water heaters in unheated areas.
- Locate the master shut-off valve.
- Disconnect and drain garden hoses, and turn off and insulate outside spigots. Customers owning a backflow prevention assembly may contact Utilities backflow staff at 704-399-2426 for tips on properly winterizing their system.
- Turn off automatic lawn sprinkler systems. Winter lawn irrigation should be done during daylight hours when temperatures are above freezing.
