Right of Way Maintenance

The Right of Way Maintenance section is responsible for mowing grass in the right of way within the city limits. The mowing frequency for City right of way is every five weeks, or about six cycles per year. Each cycle consists of about 500 miles for a total mowing mileage of about 3000 miles. In-house staff also mows 25 acres of vacant city owned properties. These areas are cut about six times per year equating to 150 mowed acres. In addition, they respond to sight distance problems, clear guardrails and apply pesticides as needed.

The Right of Way Maintenance section monitors the mowing of 270 miles of NCDOT right of way by private vendor.

The Right of Way Maintenance section manages eleven median maintenance contracts for 232 sites totaling about 260 acres.

The Right of Way Maintenance section maintains many roadway medians and the public right of way at vacant or wooded parcels.

Are all medians in the City limits maintained by the Right of Way Maintenance section?
No. The Right of Way Maintenance section maintains only those medians constructed and planted by the City outside the I-277 loop. Homeowners' Associations, businesses, developers and others maintain the rest.

How often are the medians in the City limits mowed?
The medians outside the I-277 loop are cut, at a minimum, every fourteen (14) days. The medians inside the loop are maintained more often and are the responsibility of the Landscape & Beautification section of Landscape Management.

How often is the grass on the shoulders of the City streets cut?
Every five weeks, from April to November.

How often is the grass on the shoulders of state roads in the City limits cut?
Five times a year; in April, May, June, August and October.

Who is responsible for cutting the grass on roads in Mecklenburg County, outside the City limits?
The North Carolina State Department of Transportation (NCDOT).

When I exit my driveway, I find it difficult to see traffic due to shrubs my neighbor planted. Who do I call?
Call 311. They will forward your inquiry to the Charlotte Department of Transportation (CDOT) for investigation.

Shrubs in the median are blocking the view of oncoming traffic. Who do I call?
Call Landscape Management at (704) 336-4262. We will investigate and correct, or forward to the appropriate party.

Plant material is growing out over the sidewalk and into the road a few houses down from mine. Who do I call?
Call 311. City Code requires that property owners of developed properties maintain all property between their property lines and the curb of a paved street. The Neighborhood Development Code Enforcement Division will investigate.

My neighbor's yard is overgrown. Who do I call?
