Right of Way Sidewalk Program
In response to a recognized need, the Right of Way Maintenance section created an annual sidewalk clearing program which began the winter of 2004-2005. Project sites are identified throughout the year with work performed from November to April.
The program's goal is to remove dirt, debris and growth from sidewalks so that they remain a safe, aesthetically pleasing, transportation choice which helps to create great neighborhoods in which to live, work, and play.
This program is one way the Right of Way Maintenance section supports City Strategy.
Since the project's inception, 45.39 miles of sidewalk have been cleared.
Beginning in 2006, the project took on a new dimension by focusing efforts on "challenged" neighborhoods as defined by the Charlotte Neighborhood 2006 Quality of Life Study.
During the 2006-2007 winter, 9.48 miles of sidewalks in "challenged" neighborhoods were cleared. During the 2007-2008 winter, the focus will be directed to "transitioning" neighborhoods as defined by the Charlotte Neighborhood 2006 Quality of Life Study. |
