Johnson & Wales Way/4th Street Extension/Tuckaseegee Road Project

A 2008 Transportation Bond Project

This project will improve the safety and usability of these streets for both pedestrians and bicyclists:

  • Johnson & Wales Way from Trade Street to 4th Street
  • 4th Street and 4th Street Extension from Cedar Street to Tuckaseegee Road
  • Tuckaseegee Road to the Berryhill Road intersection.

A key element will be the realignment of the intersections of Johnson & Wales Way at both Trade Street and 4th Street to eliminate the free-flow right turn lanes and create better pedestrian crossings. A second issue will be the reduction of travel lanes on 4th Street Extension and Tuckaseegee Road from two lanes in each direction to one lane in each direction with center turn lanes and bicycle lanes on the outside. The project will also include median and sidewalk improvements, as well as the addition of on-street parking where appropriate.

Johnson & Wales Way Project
This project will improve the safety and access of the project streets for all modes of transportation, especially pedestrians and bicyclists.

What's happened?
In 2008, the City conducted two public meetings and worked with engineering consultants Gannett Fleming, Inc. to create conceptual plans for the project. The plans below are conceptual only and are subject to change during the design phase:

Johnson & Wales Way and 4th Street
Fourth Street and Third Ward
Fourth Street in Wesley Heights

A full topographic survey is complete and design of the improvements is underway.

Tuckaseegee Road Lane Reconfiguration: In October, resurfacing and restriping of Tuckaseegee Road from Berry Hill to 4th Street Extension began. Bicycle lanes are being added by reducing the vehicular lanes from two lanes in each direction to one lane plus a center turn lane.

What's next?  The Tuckaseegee Road lane reconfiguration will be completed in November. The Design Phase will be complete in 2010, followed by real estate acquisition in 2011 and construction in 2012.
