Bond Project

This transportation project widens existing Idlewild Road from Piney Grove Road (near W.T.Harris Boulevard) to Drifter Drive.  This project includes the construction of sidewalk, curb and gutter, planting strips, bicycle accommodations and the addition of a planted median.  This project may include the construction of a road extension from the Idlewild Road / Piney Grove Road Intersection toward the existing Mission Hills Road.

Objectives:

  • Widen existing Idlewild Road to four lanes
  • Construct curb, gutter and sidewalk along both sides of the roadway
  • Provide a planting strip between the curb and sidewalk
  • Provide bicicle lanes
  • Design and install a planted median strip along a portion of Idlewild Road

Planning & Design Phase
City staff will work with Mulkey Engineering, Inc. to plan and design the improvements to Idlewild Road.  These plans will be based on safety, cost, benefits, traffic analysis and an extensive public involvement process that will allow citizens and nearby businesses to provide input at two public meetings.  Click here to learn how City projects are selected, designed and built.

The Idlewild Road Widening Project was one of several projects that received funding to begin planning only.  A future Transportation Bond Referendum will fund the design and construction of this road.  City staff will keep the public informed of any changes to this schedule.

The Planning Report was completed in October 2004.  This report provides information on existing conditions; traffic analysis; project alternatives; recommended alternatives; and citizen involvement among others.  No other work is underway at this time.

Real Estate Phase (Date to be determined once funding is available)
The City's Real Estate staff will work with citizens and businesses to acquire right of way and property easements needed for construction work.

Bid Phase (Date to be determined once funding is available)
During the bid phase, final specifications and special provisions will be prepared and quantities of material will be determined.  The City of Charlotte follows the North Carolina state regulations and selects the lowest, responsible bidder.

Construction Phase (Date to be determined once funding is available)
E&PM staff will work closely with the contractors and property owners to ensure right of way agreements are followed during the construction phase.
