Albemarle @ East W.T. Harris Boulevard
Intersection Improvement Project

A 1998 Transportation Bond Project

This project was approved in the 1998 State Transportation Bond Referendum.  It was originally scheduled to be built as an interchange, however, the overall costs for the planning, design, land acquisition and construction exceeded the project budget.

The City has completed design and is currently in real estate acquisition for this transportation project that will extend Lawyers Road north on new location, creating a 4-leg intersection at the Lawyers Road/Albemarle Road intersection and create a new 3-leg intersection with East W.T. Harris Boulevard just north of the East W.T. Harris Boulevard/Albemarle Road intersection.  The project will also widen and reconfigure turn lanes and adjust signal timing.

Objectives:

  • Eliminate the operational conflict between the Lawyers Road/Albemarle Road and East W.T. Harris Boulevard/Albemarle Road Intersections
  • Reduce traffic congestion, especially for the morning in-bound commute on Albemarle Road and Lawyers Road
  • Improve intersection safety for commuters and pedestrians

Cost:  $13,500,000
Please note that this figure includes all costs associated with the project such as planning and design, acquiring the right of way, utility relocation, consultant fees, signalization, permits, construction, and landscaping.

The Engineering & Property Management (E&PM) project team will manage the Albemarle/Harris Project through a four stage process.  Click here to learn how City projects are selected, designed and built.

Details from the Planning & Design Phase:
The planning for the project is complete.  City staff completed work with Mulkey Engineers to design the improvements to the Albemarle/Harris Intersection.  These plans are based on safety, cost, benefits, traffic analysis and an extensive public involvement process that allowed citizens and nearby businesses to provide input at our public meetings.  The public input helped E&PM and Mulkey Engineers with recommendations for the project.
