ADA Modifications
In 1990, the Federal Government adopted the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The ADA codes require that buildings be constructed or altered such that people with disabilities have the same access to public spaces as people with no disabilities.  This includes:  parking lots, sidewalks, entrances, stairs, elevators, restrooms, and drinking fountains.

The City of Charlotte has budgeted $3.1M to bring about 40 City-owned facilities into compliance with the ADA guidelines.  These buildings include:

     -  Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center
     -  Discovery Place
     -  Spirit Square
     -  Blumenthal Performing Arts Center
     -  Afro-American Cultural Center
     -  Mint Museum
     -  McGill Rose Garden
     -  Marshall Park
     -  2 Police satellite buildings
     -  19 Fire Stations

Status of Project
To date, we have completed about 80% of the work.  The remaining facilities on our priority list should be ADA-compliant by the end of 2003.
