NASCAR Hall of Fame and NASCAR Plaza Complex - Road Improvements

The I-277/Caldwell Interchange Project includes converting Caldwell and Brevard Streets to two-way traffic, adding eastbound access to I-277 and slowing vehicular traffic on the bridge over I-277 to speeds more appropriate for an urban environment. The project will involve the reconstruction of several ramps on the I-277/Caldwell Interchange and make modifications to Stonewall, Caldwell and Brevard Streets in downtown Charlotte.  Creating a bicycle and pedestrian connection between Center City and South End districts is also a priority for the interchange project.

The following closures and detours are currently in place:

  • The Brevard Street Connector to south bound I-277 is closed permanently.
  • The new I-277 on-ramp from Caldwell Street (also South Boulevard) is open. This replaces the closed Brevard Street/I-277 Connector.
  • Stonewall Street between Caldwell Street and College Street is one lane in each direction for the next two months.
  • Caldwell Street from Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard to Stonewall Street is a two-way street with one outbound lane and one inbound lane.
  • Brevard Street is reduced to two outbound lanes.
  • The recently constructed north bound I-277 on-ramp and off-ramp at South Boulevard is open.
  • The existing north bound I-277 off-ramp to South Boulevard is closed permanently.
