Animal Licenses

Annual licenses are required countywide for all cats and dogs four months of age or older and horses six months or older.  Purchase licenses at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Government Center, (600 E. Fourth St.), the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Shelter (8315 Byrum Dr.), or the West Service Center (4150 Wilkinson Blvd.)  Mail -in applications are available at the Animal Shelter or at local veterinarians' offices.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Shelter (8315 Byrum Dr.) is open weekdays 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. and weekends 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. (except holidays).  Citizens may adopt animals as pets for a reasonable fee that includes spaying/neutering and inoculations.

Charlotte citizens are required to obtain permits to hold attic, garage or yard sales.  Permits are issued in person at the Tax Office (700 E. Stonewall St. GET A MAP ) or the Business License Office  (700 N. Tryon St. GET A MAP ). Free parking is available at 700 N. Tryon Street.  The fee is $5 for one day or $10 for two days, cash only.

Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) operates daily bus service throughout the region.  A fleet of more than 155 buses serves 41 routes traveling 12,600 miles per day. Monthly and weekly passes are available.
