Overall, Television, radio and newspaper coverage of CO efforts has been extremely positive. There have been front-page newspaper articles and lead stories on television and radio news. Dr. Keener played a large role in providing information on carbon monoxide to local physicains and their patients. Dr. Keener can also be credited for coordinating the efforts for the Smart Start funding of CO alarms for day cares and homes.

Community Education Success

In the first nine months after the regulation went into effect, firefighters in Charlotte and Mecklenburg County responded to 50 percent more calls for activated carbon monoxide alarms that in the previous year. According to the Mecklenburg County Health Director Peter Safir, the rise in responses can be attributed to an increased public awareness of the danger of carbon monoxide. The responses by the fire departments indicate that more residents are aware of the ordinance, installing alarms and heeding the warnings when the alarms activate.
