Entries from the 2007 - 2008 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Student Writing and Art Contest will be on display at the Afro-American Cultural Center throughout the month of January. Students from the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools submit their art and prose under the local King holiday theme, "Remembering and Living the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr."

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and Wreath Laying Ceremony  1-15-08,
11:00 am
Held in Marshall Park to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Features Max. L. Siegel, president, Global Operations, Dale Earnhardt, Inc. and gospel singer LaJuene Thompson. Free lunch provided by Bojangles and coffee by Wilkinson Boulevard Starbucks while supplies last.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Parade 1-19-08, 
11:00 am
Beginning at North Tryon & 9th streets and ending at Marshall Park, this parade features local and regional high school and university marching bands, steppers, social and community service organizations as well as many of our political, religious and  community leaders. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast 1-21-08, 6:45 am
The H.L. McCrorey Family YMCA presents its 14th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Prayer Breakfast at The Westin Charlotte, located at  601 S. College St. Funds raised from this event will support the YMCA's community outreach campaign. Individual tickets are $35.00 and sponsorships are available. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday Celebration 1-21-08, 11:00 am
Recognition of the national holiday. Held at Charlotte Spirit Square McGlohon Theater, this event features music and drama.  CMS Arts and Writing Contest winners will be recognized and awarded scholarships.

"King Medallion Award"

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. "Medallion" is presented annually to individuals in the Charlote-Mecklenburg community who exemplify the ideals of Dr. King. Nominees should meet the following criteria:

1. Be a resident of Charlotte-Mecklenburg

2. Promote the ideals of racial equality and social justice as espoused by Dr. Martin Luther king, Jr. inlcuding, but not limited to:

Celebrating and promoting the worth of all human beings
Pursuing equal rights by non violent means
Encouraging people of diverse cultures to live together in  a     spirit  of love and acceptance
Active involvement in community service
Resisting injustice wherever it is found
Promoting inter-group relations and understanding
