HITS Expects Seat Belt Convincer To Convince You To Buckle Up
The Highway Interdiction and Traffic Safety Division today unveiled its newest tool in traffic education, the Seat Belt Convincer.  This tool demonstrates the importance of wearing seat belts, regardless of how fast the vehicle you are in is going.  The system enables a passenger to experience the actual force generated during a low speed collision and the value of the restraint provided by the seat belt.  Passengers who experience the force generated during a 5 mph collision will walk away with a new found respect for the protection that seat belts afford.  Increased seat belt use among Mecklenburg County residents will greatly reduce the risk of death and serious injury on our roadways.

 Seat Belt Facts:
  • Unbelted motorists are ten times more likely to suffer a severe injury in a crash
  • Unbelted motorists are twenty times more likely to be fatally injured in a crash
  • Unbelted occupants account for 68% of all lane departure related fatalities
  • Unbelted occupants account for 70% of all speed fatalities
H.I.T.S. Officer William Irby and Officer Scott Jordan spearheaded the effort to obtain the Seat Belt Convincer.  They were awarded a grant through the Governor’s Highway Safety Program that paid for the Seat Belt Convincer and all materials needed to operate it.  H.I.T.S. plans on using the Seat Belt Convincer at corporate events, public fairs and area high schools to help encourage seat belt use.
