Secondary Employment and Special Events

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department authorizes its police officers to provide police-related services, such as traffic direction and business security, in exchange for a fee paid by the employer.  Captain Teresa McNally supervises the unit.  Officer Bobby Lyons is the Secondary Employment Coordinator and Officer John Ruisi is the Special Events Coordinator. 

Officer Lyons handles jobs ranging in duration from one day to up to a year or longer.  Please contact him if you have a need for police services at your business or for personal use, such as security at a party.  Officer Lyons can be reached via e-mail at rlyons@cmpd.org or at 704-336-2335.

Officer Ruisi handles all police staffing of special events that require street closings, such as parades, street festivals, charity walks and bicycle races.  He will be assigned the event once you have submitted all necessary permits to the City's Department of Transportation.  Officer Ruisi can be reached via e-mail at jruisi@cmpd.org or at 704-336-2505.

The established rate of pay for security is $24/hr.  The established rate of pay for traffic direction is $26/hr.  A three hour minimum does apply.  For further information on the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department's policies and procedures regarding secondary employment and special events, please refer to Directive 300-007
