Non - Emergency Police Calls -  311

The Police Crime Reporting Unit (CRU), located at 601 E. Trade Street, is responsible for writing the majority of the non-emergency police reports which are requested by citizens, businesses and visitors. In order to provide a better quality of customer service, and to better utilize resources' the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department does not dispatch officers on most non-emergency crimes. These included but are not limited to, Breaking and/or Entering of Vehicles, Damage to Property, Larceny, Fraud, and Unauthorized Use of Vehicles. The CRU consists of non-sworn law enforcement professionals as well as sworn officers. They handle the majority of their workload over the telephone, but also handle all the walk-in traffic to the Police Headquarters Building, as well as managing the Online Crime Reporting service offered by the CMPD. The CRU is open to the public from 7:00AM until 11:00PM daily.

In partnership with 311, a citizen should call 311 in order to contact the Crime Reporting Unit. 311 personnel are trained to answer a wide variety of Police related questions, but will transfer the caller to the CRU if a police report is needed to be filed. 311 will also connect a caller with the CRU if they need to add something to a police report which has previously been filed.
