The department has operated with 12 districts since 2000. During that time the City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County have seen tremendous growth, especially in the outlying unincorporated areas.

A new district plan has been approved which adds a 13th District to reflect the recent gowth of the area and position the department for future growth.

There are several key changes in the 13 division plan.
- Creates the University Division.
- Charlotte Douglas Airport served by the Freedom Division instead of Steele Creek.
- The Central Service Area comprises the Central Division, to serve the Center City and South End, and the Special Events/ Secondary Employment Unit.
- The Steele Creek and Westover Division serves the South Boulevard/ Light Rail Corridor.
- Connects the neighborhoods on each side of Highway 16 in the Mount Holly/ Huntersville area.
- Reunites the Beatties Ford Road corridor communities into one division.
