One feature of the cmpd.org web site that you may already be familiar with is our mapping feature. There are some other features described below that you may find useful.

Leaving for work and wondering if there are any accidents along your route? Look on the left hand column under the heading "E-Policing". Click on the "Traffic Accident Locator". You will be provided with a list of locations where officers all over the city are currently assigned to accident calls.

In the same area, you can view the Significant Event Log, which lists major calls and crimes that happen across the city over night.

Curious as to what's going on in your part of town right now? You've seen the police helicopter in the area and you're concerned? Hit the link for "911 Calls For Service" and you'll be able to view all incidents across the city that officers are handling.

Residential burglary was down 11% in the Providence Division comparing 2007 to 2006. Lately, there have been home break-ins that have alarmed many neighbors. Providence Division Officer Wes Eubanks recently discovered a security device that some of you may want to investigate. Similar devices have existed previously, but this one model we brought our team office and tested ourselves. There are different manufacturers, but we tried out a MasterLock brand door security bar. The device is made of a metal tube that is placed under a door knob. The tube extends and tension is applied as the opposite end wedges against the floor. It is a high tech version of the chair under the door knob trick you've probably seen in movies. We placed the device on one of our office doors in a carpeted room. We didn't want to damage our office, but we put a pretty good amount of force on the door and were not able to make the security bar move or get the door open. The door bowed in the frame but did not give way. This was an unlocked door as well. Used at home, you'd also have the extra layer of security provided by your door's existing locks.

This device is not a cure all by any means and it isn't perfect. It is lightweight and moveable but the homeowner has to be diligent in using it. It can only be used while you're at home as it is impossible to put it in place and then exit that door. It is a great idea for doors of your home that are not utilized often such as a side door from a garage, doors hidden from view, or basement entrances. It would also work well in condos or apartments where there are fewer entrances. The model we tested was provided by E and S Locksmiths located in the Cotswold area at 2918 Crosby Road. Their number is 704-365-1649. David Helms has other security options you may want to investigate.
