ENTERTAINMENT DISTRICT UNIT (EDU)
Charged with maintaining a safe and secure Entertainment District, this unit is responsible for approximately 16 square blocks of Charlotte's Center City. The unit has 10 full time sworn Officers and a Sergeant. Their focus is entertainment establishments and the pedestrian corridors that serve these locations. They are a high-visibility, capable and very flexible unit that can be deployed on bikes and in vehicles. They can operate as both uniformed and plain clothes officers with a focus on alcohol, panhandling and drug operations. The unit has overall responsibility for the "Sippin' Safe" responsible consumption program and monthly entertainment venue meetings which focus on private security operations, TIPS training and establishing entertainment liaisons with Center City entertainment venue owners and managers. You may contact the unit supervisor, Sergeant Sean Crooks at 704.336.5729 or online at scrroks@cmpd.org.

WALKING PATROL UNIT
The Central Division Walking Patrol consists of three full time officers. Two officers patrol the area around the Square and have primary responsibility for the safety of Center City; one officer patrols the South End. Maintaining high visibility enables these officers to prevent crime and assist visitors to the Center City. Their duties include security of the various banks, enforcing motor vehicles laws, responding to calls for service and assisting with special events.  Since they are not restricted by a car, they are able to provide a faster response to some of the events that occur in the area.

The Central Division is fortunate to have Officers Ronnie Ensminger and Charlie Walker in the Center City and Officer Mike Cucinella in South End.  They have over 60 years of law enforcement experience among them and were specifically selected for this assignment.

BIKE PATROL
The Central Division Bike Patrol consists of 12 full time officers. The Bike Patrol's efforts are primarily directed at patrolling the Center City area, the Gateway area, and the South End. Bike Patrol officers perform the same duties as a district patrol officers in a car with one exception - YOU CAN'T HIDE FROM THEM! The bikes allow officers to go places a district patrol car cannot go. The unit was formed as and still is the Police Department's primary component of its community policing initiative. The Bike Patrol also puts on bike safety classes and is actively involved with the elementary schools. Each bike officer is L.E.B.A. (Law Enforcement Bike Association) certified and is issued a specially equipped mountain bike. This unit works all year around.  Response Area 1 Commander Dave Moorefield supervises the bike unit. He can be contacted at

CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH ENVIROMENTAL DESIGN
Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) embodies the concept that the proper design and effective use of the built environment can lead to a reduction in the incidence of crime and the fear of crime, to improve the quality of life.  CPTED is based on the concept that crime only occurs when the opportunity exists to perform acts such as vandalism, theft, burglary and assault.  Therefore, tactics such as effective lighting, visible security (e.g. bars or cameras) and effective signage reduce opportunity by increasing the likelihood of being caught. In Central Division, several officers are CPTED certified.  These officers attend a forty hour training session and a few attended advanced training.

COMMUNITY COORDINATORS
Community Coordinators serve as the district's primary communication link to its communities and their leaders.  They work more closely with community leadership to ensure that resources are coordinated to address community crime and quality of life problems.  Although problem solving is expected of all officers, Community Coordinators are not tied to primary responses to 911 calls for service or shifts.  This enables them to adjust their schedules to work closely with communities on their problems and coordinate many of the activities necessary to successfully address those problems.
