Public Comment Sought on Use of Economic Stimulus Grant

April 22, 2009

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department will receive $3,200,544 in funding from the U.S. Department of Justice. The funds are from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) and are a part of the the federal economic stimulus program.

CMPD is considering spending the funds on overtime for police officers to respond to emerging crime trends in their assigned neighborhoods, development of an electronic case papering system so that criminal case files can be transmitted electronically to the District Attorney's Office, expansion of CMPD youth programs including the Police Athletic League and Right Moves for Youth, and equipment for police officers.

For the next 30 days, through May 22, citizens are invited to share their ideas on how CMPD should use these funds. Please e-mail your comments to Darrellyn Kiser at dkiser@cmpd.org.
