Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit detectives are investigating the death of Henry Wellington Smith Jr. DOB 03/30/1951. The family of Mr. Smith has been notified of his death.
Westover Division officers responded to a call for service in reference to an assault in progress in the roadway in the 3200 block of West Blvd. shortly before 1:00 am. on Tuesday, October 14, 2008.
When officers arrived they located Mr. Smith seated in his white 2005 Ford Taurus with obvious trauma to his head and face. Mr. Smith was transported to Presbyterian Hospital where he was hospitalized for his injuries. Mr. Smith died on 10/24/2008 at 7:19 am. while still at Presbyterian Hospital.
According to witness statements, an older model white Cadillac, possibly with a white leather roof, was seen stopped in front of the victim's vehicle. Four dark skinned black males described as being in their late teens to early 20's, between 5'10" and 6'0" tall were observed exiting the white Cadillac. These subjects then pulled Mr. Smith from his car to the roadway and began repeatedly punching and kicking Mr. Smith in his head and face. The four males then got back into the white Cadillac and left the scene on West Blvd. towards Billy Graham Parkway.
