CMPD Investigating Brutal Assault which Leads to Victim's Death

October 30, 2008

Update:  On Thursday, October 30, 2008 at approximately 12:15 p.m. CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) arrested Charlie Coleman (DOB 2/25/1992).  He was arrested and taken into custody with out incident at 1451 Torrence Grove Church Rd.  Mr. Coleman was transported to Police Headquarters where he is being questioned by Homicide detectives.

In addition, CMPD's Homicide detectives signed warrants on a fourth subject, Marquis Baker (DOB 9/15/1988), in reference to the brutal assault of Mr. Smith.  Mr. Baker was subsequently arrested by VCAT at 12:45 p.m. at 7945 N Tryon St. and transported to Police Headquarters where he is being questioned by Homicide detectives.


October 29, 2008

Update:  On Wednesday, October 29, 2008 CMPD's Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) arrested Brannon Beckham (DOB 2/25/1992).  VCAT developed information that lead them to an apartment building in the 3100 block of Nobles Ave.  Mr. Beckham was taken into custody with out incident and was transported to Police Headquarters where he is being questioned by Homicide detectives.

The Violent Criminal Apprehension Team is still actively seeking Charlie Coleman (DOB 10/19/1986).  Please alert the public to call 704-336-VCAT if they have any information regarding the whereabouts of this individual.



October 24, 2008

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Homicide Unit detectives are investigating the death of Henry Wellington Smith Jr. DOB 03/30/1951.  The family of Mr. Smith has been notified of his death. 

Westover Division officers responded to a call for service in reference to an assault in progress in the roadway in the 3200 block of West Blvd. shortly before 1:00 am. on Tuesday, October 14, 2008. 

When officers arrived they located Mr. Smith seated in his white 2005 Ford Taurus with obvious trauma to his head and face.  Mr. Smith was transported to Presbyterian Hospital where he was hospitalized for his injuries.  Mr. Smith died on 10/24/2008 at 7:19 am. while still at Presbyterian Hospital. 

According to witness statements, an older model white Cadillac, possibly with a white leather roof, was seen stopped in front of the victim's vehicle.  Four dark skinned black males described as being in their late teens to early 20's, between 5'10" and 6'0" tall were observed exiting the white Cadillac.  These subjects then pulled Mr. Smith from his car to the roadway and began repeatedly punching and kicking Mr. Smith in his head and face.  The four males then got back into the white Cadillac and left the scene on West Blvd. towards Billy Graham Parkway.
