South Division officers responded to a call for service in reference to a Residential Occupied Breaking and Entering and that one person had been shot.  When officers arrived on scene they were met by the 911 caller who advised that the male subject who had broken into the residence had been shot.  Officers located the male subject inside the kitchen suffering from a possible gunshot wound.  Medic arrived on scene and pronounced the subject deceased.   The subject has not been identified; pending identification and family notification his name will be released.

Homicide Unit detectives are on scene canvassing the neighborhood and Crime Scene Search units are processing the scene for physical evidence.

According to the preliminary investigation, it is believed that several subjects who were armed with handguns and possibly wearing masks broke into the residence at 8919 Scotch Heather Way.  A confrontation occurred between an occupant of the residence and the armed subjects resulting in one of the subjects being shot.  In addition, one occupant of the residence was struck on the head with a weapon and was transported to Carolinas Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.  Detectives believe that a second subject fled the scene in an unknown vehicle.  The other occupants of the residence also left but then later returned.  They are currently at Police Headquarters being interviewed by detectives.  Detectives believe the subjects targeted this residence for a specific purpose; this is not a random incident and detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this incident.
