Suspect in Two 1998 Sexual Assaults in Custody

Arrest of Darrell Boyd


The individual CMPD Sexual Assault Cold Case detectives identified and charged with two brutal sexual assaults from 1998 is in custody in Mecklenburg County. Darrell Boyd (B/M, DOB 08/26/1971) was scheduled to be released December 13, 2007, from a correctional facility in Ohio where he had been serving two years for crime he committed there. Instead, Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Deputies traveled to the facility over the weekend, transported Boyd back to Charlotte and booked him into the Mecklenburg County Jail.

A brief outline of each case and the charges follows. We will not be able to provide further details in these cases until all cases have been adjudicated

At approximately 930 am May 1, 1998 the 22 year-old victim was home alone in her apartment. The suspect entered the apartment through the front door armed with a handgun. He held the victim and sexually assaulted her for more than an hour before fleeing.

At approximately 11 p.m. on May 14, 1998, the victim was home alone in her apartment. The suspect entered her residence through a sliding glass door. He held the victim in her residence for nearly three hours, physically and sexually assaulting her, before fleeing.

In addition to an unrelated charge for Trafficking Heroin, Darrell Boyd has been charged with the following crimes:

  •  4 counts 1st degree Rape
  •  2 counts 2nd degree Rape
  •  4 counts 1st degree Sex Offense
  •  3 counts 2nd degree Sex Offense
  •  2 counts 1st degree Kidnapping
  •  1 count Robbery
  •  1 count 1st degree Burglary
  •  1 count Felony B&E

    CMPD formed the Sexual Assault Cold Case Unit in January 2006. It is staffed with two detectives and one volunteer whose main purpose is to review older cases with the anticipation of uncovering new leads that may point them to the identity of the suspect(s).
