To better reflect its work and mission, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is changing the name of the Animal Control Bureau to Animal Care and Control. The name change is consistent with what other Bureaus are doing nationally. It more clearly communicates the responsibilities the Bureau has for compassionate care of animals and the regulatory control services that contribute to public safety.
Over the past several years, Animal Control has forged strong relationships with the Humane Society of Charlotte and more than 40 local and statewide rescue advocacy groups that have saved more animals. Together, the Humane Society of Charlotte and Animal Control have formed a partnership to receive grants for spay/neuter awareness, education and the ability to offer free clinics. In FY07, Animal Control provided 801 free spay/neuter surgeries.
Animal Care and Control has many programs that focus on education, prevention, pet management, and animal health concerns.
