2009 Law Enforcement Ride to DC

On Sunday May 10 over twenty officers from CMPD and MCSO will leave on bicycles to pedal 400+ miles in four days, riding in honor and memory of those who have died in the line of duty. We will end our ride in Washington, DC in time to attend the Candlelight Vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial in Washington, DC.

Here is how you can help your fellow officers complete this ride:

  • Spread the word – attached is a letter to send to neighborhood groups, businesses, and your friends asking for their help on the ride. Direct them to our website at www.biketodc.com, all the details about the ride are there.

  • Come ride with us just for a few miles (we can't take any more riders for the full four days). Two chances to do this.
    • Monday morning 5/4 a group of police officers from the Police Unity Tour is coming through Charlotte. They are riding from Charleston, SC to Washington, DC – 1000+ miles in 10 days – for Police Week. We plan to join them where Carowinds Blvd crosses the state line early that morning – and ride with them to downtown. After a brief ceremony at our Fallen Officers Memorial across from HQ, we will ride out of town on North Tryon Street to the Cabarrus County line. It's about a 25 mile ride across the county.
    • Join us as we ride out of town on Sunday morning, 5/10 on the way to DC. We'll roll out from the CMPD Headquarters building at 0730, you can ride to the County line and then turn around and ride back downtown, or you can keep riding with us as far as you wish – we're going to Asheboro the first day.
  • Donate to the ride. Details are on the website www.biketodc.com, all contributions are tax deductible.

  • Help us find the things we need besides money. We know our officers know people who can help. Details are on the website, here is what we are looking for:
    • Gift cards from local grocery stores or Sams, Costco, etc. We need to stock up on food and snacks before we leave.
    • Looking for the use of a cargo truck – 14-17' range – to carry bikes and luggage. U-Haul, Ryder?
    • Any contacts with hotel/motel chains. We have rooms in Asheboro (Sun 5/10), Danville, VA (Mon 5/11), Richmond, VA (Tue 5/12), DC area – Arlington, Crystal City, etc, (Wed 5/13) but can change to any rooms that someone may find for free! Lodging is our biggest cost.

You can also see pictures and video from the rides in 2007 and 2008 at www.biketodc.com.
