CMPD WOMEN BUILD A HOUSE...

Charlotte's Women Build is part of an 18-month nationwide effort by Habitat for Humanity International called Women Building a Legacy. From October 26-November 2, 2002, women volunteers from the CMPD Women's Network, various organizations and throughout the Charlotte Community helped to build three new Habitat homes in the Metro (David 2) District near Olando and Franklin Avenues. This effort has focused on women's ability to transform children's lives and address the fact that more than 12 million children in the United States are living in poverty.

Most volunteers worked a total of 8 hours each day, learning what "Sweat Equity" was all about. One of the biggest skills learned on those days was how to "raise the roof" without the assistance of professional equipment.

Since 2002, CMPD women have  helped new homeowners build a home and helped Habitat for Humanity raise money for more projects in the community.  For more information about Habitat, visit http://www.habitatcharlotte.org/

The CMPD Women's Network has also regularly participated in the American Cancer Society's "Making Strides Against Breast Cancer" Walk in Charlotte.  In 2002, the third year the event was held in Charlotte, 36 women from the CMPD walked the course at Carolina Place Mall in Pineville, NC.  When the dust settled, walkers and well-wishers raised about $120,000 toward the cause.

Along with their own brand of "Sweat Equity", the CMPD Women's Network helped to raise over $1,000 for the effort in 2002!

Each year since, CMPD Officers and friends have volunteered thier time and talents to help ensure that the Charlotte Community would help Make Strides Against Breast Cancer.  The 2005 event raised $250,000,  the most in its six years of walks.
