The Answers to the Quiz are Below:
1. C.....JUVENILES - Juveniles are responsible for most of the car thefts in the Charlotte area at this time and the number of juveniles arrested is climbing at an alarming rate.
2. A.....NO - Car theft insurance in most cases does not cover the full replacement costs of an unrecovered vehicle. It normally covers the replacement value of the vehicle based on the value of the vehicle at the time it was stolen. Many victims of car theft owe money after their insurance settles. Many victims whose vehicles are recovered complain that they find mechanical problems months after settling that they attribute to the treatment their vehicle received in the suspects hands. Many vehicles that are stolen will be driven by several juveniles besides the original suspect. Victims often pay the additional costs of a renting a vehicle while their vehicle is being repaired. Most of the victims possessions that are found in the vehicle are thrown away, sold or put to the suspects own use. Many victims find these items irreplaceable.
3. C.....$4400.00 - According to the national insurance institute, the average vehicle repair cost is $4400.00.
4. A.....TRUE - There are a number of reasons that more people are being arrested for fraudulently reporting their vehicle was stolen. Some victims have accidents and have a suspended or no drivers license. Some victims report their vehicle was stolen when in fact they traded the use of their vehicle for drugs and the other party failed to return their vehicle. Another rising crime is the victim who steals his own car and sometimes hides it to collect the insurance, sometimes "selling" their car. Burning cars, hiding cars in ponds and lakes and even burying their vehicles is another common practice. There are a variety of other reasons people fraudulently report their vehicles stolen. Law enforcement and insurance companies have developed special skills to detect these victims and many of them are being arrested and charged with felonies.
5. C.....92% - Most stolen vehicles are taken by juveniles and are later recovered. Unfortunately many of these vehicles are wrecked and/or heavily vandalized. Many of these vehicles have been driven hundreds of miles and have been seriously abused. Some of this damage is hard to detect until months have passed. All motorist are paying for this crime through higher insurance costs. In addition, many motorist will suffer from highway accident injuries caused by unlicensed and inexperienced suspects driving stolen vehicles. The suspect who drives a stolen vehicle is 200 times more likely to have an accident than the victim.
6. B.....FALSE - If you lend your vehicle or keys to a friend, casual acquaintance, stranger, perspective buyer, etc., and they fail to return the vehicle, you, the victim, can file a report for "unlawful use of a conveyance" which is a misdemeanor. The victim must go to the magistrate and swear out a warrant. The magistrate will not issue a warrant if the victim can not provide an address or date of birth for the suspect. If the victim cannot obtain a warrant, the police can not put the vehicle into N.C.I.C. (National Crime Information Computer). The victim is without a car and the police cannot really help until it can be shown that the suspect has converted the vehicle to his own permanent use. Know who you give your keys or vehicle to use!
7. C.....IN YOUR PURSE OR WALLET - There is not a good answer to this question. Suspects are experts at locating "hidden keys." It happens every day! Do NOT leave any extra keys or key codes in or under your vehicle. There are risks to hiding your extra keys in you wallet or purse as well but this is the best of the three solutions.
8. C.....YOU AND OR YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY - Private companies contracted by the city will tow your vehicle. Often the police will try to contact the victim but in many cases the vehicle is to dangerous to drive and has to be towed anyway. This is especially true if the ignition has been broken.
9. B.....OLDER VEHICLES - That's right. Many people will not protect the older vehicle thinking that the suspect would rather steal a new car. Many older cars are easier to steal making them more appealing to car thieves. The parts off an older car are often more valuable than those of a newer vehicle.
10. B.....NO - Most of the suspects caught in stolen vehicles are charged with "possession of a stolen vehicle" not auto theft. Possession of a stolen vehicle is a felony.
11. B.....NO - Once again, most of the cars in Charlotte are stolen by juveniles for fun and transportation. They are often involved in traffic accidents and abandoned.
12. B.....YOU ARE KIDDING - Cars that are stolen are often used to commit other crimes. They are used in robberies, house and store break-ins, shoplifting, and a variety of other crimes.
