On October 21, 1929 Detective Jenkings and his partner were at First and South Davidson Streets attempting to quell a riot. The detectives were trying to make an arrest when a suspect grabbed a "riot" shotgun from Jenkins' partner. During the struggle that ensued, Detective Jenkins, 48, was shot and later died from his injuries.
