Applications for the Spring 2009 process are due by October31, 2008 !
General Information
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police department offers an exciting and rewarding non-paid internship program that prepares students for the challenges and perplexities associated with careers in law enforcement. Our interns work alongside patrol officers, detectives and Animal Control technicians in a wide spectrum of assignments throughout the department. Although interns are not law enforcement officers, they are part of the CMPD team and serve a vital role in the mission of this department. As part of the team, our interns learn effective problem-solving and partnership-building skills along with technical skills such as conducting criminal investigations and presenting cases in court. To gain a better understanding of day-to-day operations, interns are permitted to do ride-alongs with officers and crime-scene technicians as part of their duty day.
CMPD interns work varying hours and shifts in the patrol district or bureau that they are placed. All interns are expected to be on time to assignments and to give their supervisors notice when absences are anticipated.
Individuals interested in an internship are encouraged to prepare and submit an internship packet early. Our positions are very competitive and fill quickly. We offer internships during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters of each academic year. Prospective candidates can obtain an application packet from the internship advisor at their university/college or click on the CMPD Intership Application link below.
All candidates must submit a letter of interest specifying their reasons for desiring an internship and the area(s) of law enforcement they wish to spend their internship period working. A resume, a letter of recommendation from the candidate's advisor and a copy of official college transcripts must be included with the packet. All packets should be mailed to the Internship Coordinator at the CMPD Training Academy. After packets are received, interviews are scheduled and background checks are conducted on all candidates. Those selected for an internship must submit to a drug test before accepting the position.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department values all its interns and strives to create a work atmosphere that facilitates growth and learning. We value integrity and are committed to enhancing our organization and community through hard work and respect for others. We are very excited about the Internship Program and look forward to meeting and placing new interns in positions throughout the department.
