 Agency and Event Description:
As an official Grand Prix Series event, the Twilight 5K Road Race & Walk represents the primary annual fundraiser of Right Moves For Youth, a local nonprofit agency dedicated to reducing school drop-out rates, juvenile truancy, delinquency and violence.  As one of the premier running events in the region, the Twilight 5K Road Race & Walk is unique because it is the only week-night sporting event that brings together competitive runners, non-competitive runners and walkers, highly-trained athletes and hundreds of spectators. The Twilight 5K Road Race & Walk also features fundraising opportunities for teams and individuals plus an array of entertainment and fun-filled activities for the entire family – including a Kids Fun Run immediately following the 5K Race.  A special highlight of the race is the annual Spotlight Competition between the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office and the Charlotte Fire Department.  Both individual and team awards will be distributed for the 5K Competitive Run.  Corporate participation awards and individual and team fund-raising awards will also be distributed on race night.

The mission of Right Moves For Youth is to provide the motivation for its club members in grades 4-12 to succeed in school, improve their quality of life, and become responsible members of society.

Right Moves For Youth's mission is realized in the operation of school-based clubs and neighborhood-based community clubs led by dedicated volunteers who promote positive youth development by enhancing participants' academic accomplishments, leadership ability, life skills awareness, self-esteem, civic responsibility and cultural awareness.

Right Moves For Youth was founded in 1993 by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Dave Scheppegrell and Charlotte businessman Frank Bragg

Officer Scheppegrell conceived the idea of working with students in a club setting to provide them with the encouragement and resources they needed to be successful, and rewarding them for their accomplishments.  The success of the first boys' club, established at Marie G. Davis Middle School in 1989, prompted him to expand the program to other schools.

Frank Bragg began working with Scheppegrell and his clubs in 1993.  Under Bragg's guidance and leadership, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to operate the clubs was organized and incorporated as Right Moves For Youth, and the program quickly spread to other school sites.  Right Moves For Youth now operates clubs in several dozen Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and neighborhood-based Community Club sites, serving up to 2,000 students each year.

Supported by the United Way of Central Carolinas, corporations, foundations, and generous individuals who are passionate about our mission, Right Moves For Youth also relies heavily upon its dedicated volunteer club leaders.  Each RMFY club is supported by a "three-legged stool":  an educator, a law enforcement officer and a community volunteer, working together to run a RMFY club and providing at least three unique role models for our club members.

As a result of their participation in Right Moves For Youth, we expect that our club members will:
     - Show an increased desire/ability to attend school on a regular basis;
     - Improve or sustain positive school behavior;
     - Improve or sustain strong academic performance.

Our success in achieving these outcomes is determined based on analysis of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools' data on attendance, suspension rates, and graduation/promotion rates.
