Crime Story
On January 11, 1987, the victim was abducted at gunpoint as she walked from the Crown Station located near South Boulevard and Tyvola Road. Gene Mack Vernon and Joe Wayne Moss Jr. forced her into a red Volkswagen SW. The victim was driven to an unknown location off Wildlife Road by Moss then told by Vernon to do what he said and she wouldn't be killed.

The victim was raped by Vernon and Moss then told by Vernon to get out of the vehicle. Once the victim exited the vehicle, she was shot in the head once with a handgun.

Vernon and Moss fled the scene and the victim flagged down a passerby for help. The victim was taken to Carolinas Medical Center where she underwent surgery to remove the bullet from her head. She survived.

Vernon and Moss were arrested and both admitted to being at the scene of the crime. Vernon and Moss pled guilty to First Degree Kidnapping, Second Degree Rape and Attack with a Deadly Weapon with the intent to kill or inflict serious injury (AWDWWITKISI) and received a sentence of 25 years consecutive for each conviction.
