Crime Story:
On May 31, 1993 Dameon McCullough and several other individuals were drinking at a vacant house in the 300 block of Katonah Avenue.  At approximately 12:47 a.m. a green van came down the street toward the area of the vacant house and Dameon McCullough jumped off of the porch of the house carrying a shotgun and ran toward the street. Witnesses told police that he had yellow out, "that is a jump out van!," meaning a vice van used n raids by the police department. When the van passed Dameon fired the shotgun into the passenger side of the van. After firing the shot he ran to the backside of the vacant house.

Victim #1, who was a five year old child, was riding in the van and was struck by the blast. She died at Charlotte Memorial Hospital (Carolinas Medical Center) upon arrival.  Victim #2, the victim's sister, was also struck by the shot however she survived her injuries.

There were six occupants of the van.  They were in route to meet with the victim's mother who lived on that street.

McCullough pled to second degree murder and received a LIFE sentence for the death of victim #1 and twenty years for the injury of victim #2.
