Crime Story
On August 8, 1992, the victim and Keith James went to room 435 at the Downtown Motor Inn located at 701 N. Tryon St.  At the time of the incident the victim was 14 years old and James was 21.

According to James' confession they went to the room to have six.  After they had sex James was playing around with the victim and they fell to the floor.  James landed on top of the victim and she yelled at him to get off of her because was pregnant and he might hurt her baby.  He stated that if he hurt her baby she would have the baby's daddy kill him.  He took out a 38 revolver he was carrying and wrapped a pillow around the weapon.  He told her he could shoot her if he wanted to and put the pillow to her head.

His version of the story is that they struggled with the gun and it went off killing the victim.  James left the hotel and took a cab home.  He later told his father what he had done and turned himself in to the police.

James pled guilty to Second Degree Murder and was sentenced to 40 years in prison.
