Crime Story
On May 5, 1990 at approximately 2 a.m., Richard Edward Hoey, Lawon Shante McGill and a juvenile were in the parking lot of the Pep Boys at 2335 Freedom Drive waiting for patrons of the Scorpios Lounge to come back to their parked vehicles for the purpose of robbing them.  Scorpios was located the the Pep Boys. 

The victim walked up to his vehicle and was standing in the driver's doorway when he was approached by Hoey who was carrying a sawed off shotgun.  Hoey told the victim to "give it up" meaning he wanted to rob the victim.  The victim told Hoey he would have to "kill him first."  At that point Hoey shot through the driver's window of the vehicle shattering the window striking the victim in the chest.  Hoey, McGill and the juvenile ran from the scene to their homes in a nearby neighborhood.  The victim died at the scene from his wounds. 

McGill went on a robbery spree after the homicide and was later arrested for this case as well as others.  He pled guilty to Second Degree Murder and five counts of Robbery.  He was sentenced to LIFE in prison. 

Hoey pled guilty to Second Degree Murder.  He was sentenced to LIFE in prison.  The juvenile was sentenced to spend time in a juvenile facility for his involvement until his 18th birthday.
