Conviction: First-Degree Murder DOC# 0135856 Parole Review Date: 1-06-07 Sentence: Life Has Served: 35 yrs 7 mths to date
|
Crime Story On the June, 18 1970, James Westbrook and Johnny Frazier kidnapped the first victim from the strip mall at North Tyron and Sugercreek Rd. They drove her to a wooded area, taped her hands and feet, and left her in the woods. They then drove her car to South Park Mall to look for their second victim.
They were driving around a mall parking lot when they observed Carla Underwood getting into her vehicle. When they pulled their vehicle near to Carla's vehicle, Westwood jumped out, ran up to Carla's vehicle, and forced his way into her vehicle. As Westwood struggled with Carla over the vehicle, he fired one shot at her. Carla struck by the bullet, slumped into the floorboard of her vehicle. Westbrook drove the vehicle to a dead-end road while Johnny Frazier followed him in the other vehicle. They both dumped her body in the woods.
Johnny Frazier was found guilty of First-Degree Murder and First-Degree Kidnapping. He was sentencedto LIFE in prison.
James Westbrook was sentenced to death, but his death sentene was overturned in 1972. He is currently serving a LIFE sentence forthe murder of the victim.
